Climate Change
When we talk about climate change and taking care of our environment we are talking about human impacts (anthropogenic) on the earth’s natural climate system.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was one of three environmental treaties negotiated at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, better known as the Earth Summit in 1992. The goal of the Convention is to “prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system.”
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is a scientific body under the auspices of the United Nations. Thousands of scientists from throughout the world contribute to the work of the Panel. Several reports have been produced by the IPCC including the Climate Change 2014 Synthesis Report: Summary for Policy Makers.
The report can be found at: https://www.ipcc.ch/pdf/assessment-report/ar5/syr/AR5_SYR_FINAL_SPM.pdf
This summary follows the structure of the longer report, which addresses the following topics: Observed changes and their causes; Future climate change, risks and impacts; Future pathways for adaptation, mitigation and sustainable development; Adaptation and mitigation. Though the forecasts are dire and climate change affects the poor of the world in particular and weakens our collective capacity for a sustainable future, there is hope to be found in the report too.

At Plenty Canada we integrate climate change adaptation, mitigation and sustainable development strategies into all of our work. We can all take steps to address this challenge.
